Origins[]

The Beithir is a creature with origins in Celtic mythology, legend and folklore. In particular, accounts of its existence first arise in the mythology, legend and folklore of Scotland. They belong to a class of monsters referred to as the Fuath.

It is believed by many that the Beithir is born after a head is cut off of a snake, and then the head is not properly disposed of, far away from the rest of the body. As a result, the head rejoins the body, now endowed with new supernatural power.

Those who ascribe to this belief have yet to make clear if only a certain sort of snake must be beheaded in this way, or if all snakes pose this potential supernatural danger.
